Tresch, Severin (2023), Performance as a social system: analyzed using the example of the operational performance improvement of the UMT 250 production at Schurter AG, Bachelor thesis, University of St. Gallen (HSG).

The concept of performance developed by Spickers (2023), «Performance as a social system», describes performance and competence on the basis of the theory of autopoietic social systems developed by Niklas Luhmann. This paper examines the extent to which the social phenomenon of ‹performance› can be described along the lines of a differential theory of autopoietic social systems using an actual case. The capacity expansion of the UMT 250 production of the Schurter company serves as a case study. Three different scientific hypotheses examined in this paper provide information on the applicability of three observation levels of Spickers› performance concept to a real case study (2023). Furthermore, a fourth hypothesis examines the possibility of describing strategy from a systemic perspective. The narrative of operational performance improvement from the perspective of the performance concept illustrates the possibility of describing the social phenomenon of ‹performance› as a differentiated system along a differential theory of autopoietic social systems. Furthermore, the work emphasizes the possibility that strategy can be presented from a systemic perspective.
